NO Shame Eugene!

No Shame Eugene, the first Holiday Extravaganza!

No Shame Eugene is an ongoing event thats family friendly and free. The event takes place on the first friday at 8:15p.m. downtown at Atrium on 10th an Olive. The artistic director is Jeff Geiger, but I’m sure there are many others who help to keep this thing going. December 2nd 2011 was the first time I attended and it was also the first time No Shame Eugene put on their “Holiday Extravaganza.” The main event featured a group of belly dancers who gave presentation of their research on many different styles from many different origins. And that was just to kick things off.

The meaning behind No Shame Eugene is to give a stage to those who want to showcase their talents. Once everything gets going there is a sign-up sheet for anyone who wants to present a piece of work. They encourage people to get up and be heard. They’ve done a great job and creating an environment where people can come and get up in front of a crowd without the intimidation of being heckled or made-fun-of.

Here’s their motto:

One theater. Five minutes. Three Rules:
1. All pieces must be original.
2. No breaking anything, including the law.
3. All pieces must be five minutes or less.
Singing, dancing, skits, experimental; welcoming pros and no-talent hacks alike.

System Preferences Vrs. Application Preferences

Explaining what system and application preferences are… just a basic overview of what both can do.

Aerosol art – Self Portrait

Here is a super sped of video of a self portrait I painted using aerosol spray paint. This was one of three in a series I did for a previous art class at LCC (Lane Community College). The theme I tried to carry out was a spin on the “Three wise monkeys,” or “Three mystic apes.” Either way the message I was trying get people to realize was the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. To make it more interesting to the youth of today I replaced a few things, like: headphones for the hearing, shades for the eyes, and a bandana that covered the mouth.

When one of my neighbors came by and noticed my work, he said it was like “the silhouette of our society.” At first I wasn’t sure about what he meant, and if it really fit but as I thought about it more I realized it fits very well. The three pieces are portraits of a young person heavily influenced by media and what not. As the youth of today grow and mature they will become the adults, thus casting a shadow and creating a silhouette of what is to come.

For this piece I mixed all the shades of gray. This may not sound out of the ordinary but remember, this painting was done using spray paint. Mixing your own spray paint is a lot like graffiti as an art form. There is some science to it, but mostly its an educated guess. Its all about experimenting. Getting out there and doing something, not always planning ahead. That is what keeps new ideas coming and the creativity flowing.

Jeff Goolsby @ LCC Gallery

Jeff Goolsby the media arts director here at Lane Community College had the great opportunity of displaying his artwork in the new gallery here on campus(building 11). At his show he talked about a handful of different subjects, but the one I enjoyed the most was of the comparison between an artist creating work because they enjoy their process, and an artist creating work based on what other people like. The point he made was that as an artist we should strive to create our art because we enjoy what we create. We enjoy the problem solving and the whole process. Worrying ourselves about what others might like, or think, is selfish and takes away from the actual process of art making.

I took a couple of pictures of his work. The series of photographs are about the cultural roots of families. The theme was based on big corporation/business and their impacts on communities, and was symbolized through a Taiwanese new years mask worn by some young girls (his daughters). The question he is trying to provoke through the imagery is, “when you take off the mask, what do you get?”

This was a new experience for me and I really enjoyed being able to hear an artist talk about what they’re doing and want to do in the future. I plan on attending more gallery showings where I will actually be there to hear the artist speak about their works. And if you’ve never been to a showing and had the chance to listen to what the artist has to say I would definitely suggest you give it a try.

Plexi-Depth

Here are some examples of my silkscreen work. With these pieces I am trying to play with visual depth as well as physical depth between layers of silkscreen. The design is a 3-d graffiti piece that I separated into multiple layers.

With my work I am trying to bring graffiti-art closer to fine-arts. I’m trying to really show how the same principles applied to other forms of art are the same ones used in graffiti-art. Graff doesn’t only have to be done illegally on walls, but it can also be put up in houses and galleries.

My process is simple although this is still new to me and I’m still working on perfecting it. I start with a sketch of the design, then recreate it in Illustrator(Ai) or Photoshop(Ps). In this case I used Ai and the pen tool. After I tweak it a bit more and play with the composition I used multiple gradients to fill in segments of letters. Each gradient equals a different layer of the letter, each having about 4-6 gradients. From here I would group the parts of letter that I want to be on a physical layer of plexi-glass and organize them accordingly in Ai. Export PDF’s and take it to the printers to get transparencies made, use those in combination with photo emulsion to create silkscreens. Now I get to re-enter the creative process. Once I have the screens burnt with the design/image I can manipulate many things, including: color(s), composition, and the surface it will be printed on. After all that fun these are what you get.

Please comment and critique… Do YOU think this is a step towards bringing graffiti art closer to a fine art?

Steve Jobs – Documentary

Steve Jobs was a smart guy. He knew technology, but more importantly he knew how to sell it. Steve was the co-founder and creative force of apple computers. In 1981 the Lisa computer was starting to come around, Steve was turned down as lead for the program. This didn’t stop his competitive nature, he took a small group and started his own project he named Macintosh. This group he said would be the “pirates” and the Lisa group would be the navy. Steve had very high standards set for creating this new line of personal computers. 1984 Steve was basically fired from the company when the board chose John Scully as CEO instead. Jobs took 5 key managers and started up, Next in 1985. This would be Jobs attempt to redesign the personal computer, but the product would all but fail. One thing Jobs would take from this almost failure would be the operating software the system ran on. He would later sell the Next company to apple for 400 million, and become iCEO.

Steve saw himself as an artist, and a revolutionist. In 1995 Jobs made an investment in Pixar, putting much of his time and money into a project that others didn’t think would work. In another interview on Jobs he said that Pixar wasn’t a technology company but that it was for entertainment as a product. Although Pixar’s intent was for entertainment, it would pioneer new technology for animation, and change it forever.

As Jobs had pulled away from Apple in 85 the company would soon find itself coming to a halt in new ideas and creativity. This is when Jobs would come back and greatly change the company. He dropped the interim and became CEO of apple. Jobs basically cut the fat out of the company and took it back to what it was good at. Jobs also worked very hard and closely with marketing the new term, “think different” he was involved in every aspect down to each photograph.
